Van 9 t/m 16 Augustus vindt in Oldenzaal en Weerselode vierde editie plaats van het Stift International Music Festival. Het ‘Stiftfestival‘ van artistiek leider Daniel Rowland combineert de elementen van een internationaal kamermuziekfestival met die van een summerschool - veel van de musici die optreden geven ook intensief masterclasses aan een groep talentvolle studenten uit binnen- en buitenland. Door de combinatie van concerten door topmusici en intensieve lessen aan studenten van internationaal, nationaal en regional niveau beoogt het Stiftfestival studenten, faculty en publiek een buitengewoon intensieve en inspirerende ervaring te bieden.
From 9 - 16 August the fourth edition of the Stift International Music Festival will take place in Oldenzaal and Weerselo, in the eastern Netherlands. The ‘Stiftfestival‘ of artistic director Daniel Rowland combined the elements of an international chamber music festival, with those of a summerschool - many of the artists performing in the concerts also give intensive masterclasses and chamber music coaching to a group of talented students from around the globe. Through the combination of concerts by leading musicians and intensive masterclass with students of international, national and regional level, Stift aims to offer public, students and faculty an unusually intensive and inspiring experience.
Het Stiftfestival is tijdens de vier jaar van haar bestaan sterk gegroeid en heeft voor het festival 2008 een buitengewone groep musici aan kunnen trekken. De terugkeer, voor een volle week, van de unieke meesterviolist en vioollegende Ivry Gitlis mag heel bijzonder genoemd worden. Gitlis, die een haast mythische status heeft onder vioolkenners als een onnavolgbare virtuoos is ook een bijzonder charismatische persoonlijkheid. Over zijn optreden in het Stiftfestival van afgelopen jaar schreef Wenneke Savenije in NRC Handelsblad:
The festival grown considerably during the four years of it‘s existence and has been able to attract an exceptionally group of musicians for Stift 2008. The return of the unique virtuoso and violin-legend Ivry Gitlis is very special indeed. Gitlis, who has an almost mythical status among violin lovers is, at 85, a tremendous musician and extremely charismatic personality. NRC Handelsblad wrote about his concerts and masterclasses at the ‘07 Stiftfestival:
"De Russisch-Israëlische Gitlis, op zijn vijfde ontdekt door Huberman en daarna student van Flesch, Enesco en Thibaud in Parijs, is een levende legende. De flamboyante romanticus trad op met alle groten der aarde, maakte fantastische opnames en inspireerde vele jonge musici tot virtuositeit en ultieme muzikale passie...[hij] besluit zijn magische optreden met een ontroerend schorre versie van Kreislers Liebesleid. Hopelijk wordt Gitlis minstens honderd jaar, en komt hij volgend jaar weer in Weerselo demonstreren dat muziek veel méér is dan technische perfectie."

Ivry Gitlis soleert met het Stift Festival Camerata met vioolconcerten van Bach, voert met meestercellist Alexander Baillie en de sensationele jonge pianiste Irina Botan Tchaikowsy‘s hartstochtelijke pianotrio uit en zal ook tijdens diverse andere concerten optreden, zoals in ‘Pas de Deux‘, met Daniel Rowland. Hij geeft ook een 6 daagse intensieve masterclass in de Stiftschool in Weerselo aan internationale viool talenten.
Ivry Gitlis will appear as a solist with the Stift Festival Camerata directed by Ronald Hoogeveen in violin concertos by Bach, including the gorgeous Double Concerto, will perform Tchaikowsky‘s Piano triowith cellist Alexander Baillie and pianist Irina Botan, and will may well make more spontaneous appearances. Maestro Gitlis will also teach a 6 day intensive masterclass for 10 highly talented violinists from around the world.
Een andere bijzondere gast is de Britse topklarinettist Michael Collins, wellicht de bekendste klarinettist van dit moment en een regelmatige solist met alle grote orkesten van de wereld. Michael Collins speelt twee concerten, met oa. het klarinetkwintet van Brahms en -in het Messiaen jaar- het Quatuor pour le Fin du Temps in de akoestisch schitterende Hofkerk in Oldenzaal.
Another special guest is the renowned British clarinettist Michael Collins, one the greatest masters of his instrument and a regular guest with the world‘s great orchestras. Micael Collins will perform two concerts, including the Brahms Clarinet Quintet and - in the 100th year of Messiaens birth- the magnificent Quartet for the end of time in the acoustically wonderful Hofkerk in Oldenzaal.
Among the violinists we are delighted to welcome back the Austrian David Frühwirth, the wellknown Dutch violinist Ronald Hoogeveen, who will also direct the Festival Camerata, and of course Daniel Rowland, artistic director of the festival, soloist and first violin of the Brodsky Quartet. New guestsat Stift ‘08 are Priya Mitchell, acclaimed by the press as "one of the most interesting violinists of her generation", the eminent British cellist Alexander Baillie, a soloist with many leading orchestras and sought after professor at the Hochschule in Bremen, the young Britisch cellist Thomas Carroll, the violists Patrick Jüdt (professor in Bern) and Xandi van Dijk and Leon Bosch, solo bassist of the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields and one of that select group of international doublebass soloists. We welcome back leading Dutch musicians and festival friends such as Francien Schatborn and Joel Waterman (viola), Jan Bastiaan Neven and Evelien Prakke (cello) and Frank van de Laar and Daria van den Bercken (piano). New this year is the vocal element, in the person of highly acclaimed young baritone Henk Neven, a guest at important international operahouses, with a beautiful Russian program.
During the evening concert on Sunday August 10 the Dutch premiere will be given of the String Quartet of David Rowland (1939 - 2008), the English composer who lived for the greatest part of his life in Weerselo, opposite the Stiftskerk, and in Oldenzaal. The festival is dedicated to him.
